skates_on_3_mg.jpgShowing off may be discouraged by parents but these youngsters had plenty of reason to feel proud after raising cash for charity with their demonstrations at the Skate Jam afternoon in Bedfont.

Dozens of teenagers grabbed their bikes, inline skates and skateboards last weekend and headed to the event at Bedfont skate park, in Hatton Road.

And not content with just performing, the determined youngsters also organised and managed the entire project, which raised cash for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Foundation.

Hundreds mourn popular barman

Funeral-01-FL.jpgOver 200 sobbing mourners packed into the chapel at Hanworth Crematorium yesterday to remember popular barman Michael Joseph who died after falling from a Heathrow bridge.

The funeral was an opportunity for friends and family to share their grief and shock over the sudden passing of the 21-year-old, who was fatally injured by the 50ft drop on June 28.

The father-of-one, who lived on the Butts Farm estate but originally hailed from Bedfont, was remembered fondly as a son, brother, friend and as father to his three-year-old son Ashley.

The annual Bedfont Lakes Country Fair returns on Sunday July 20 for its 14th year and promises to be a great family day out.

This year the park will be packed with fun activities and displays including falconry displays, Titan the Robot, Lurcher displays, ferret and terrier racing, Charlie the Clown and a fun fair.

A suspended inquiry into plans to develop the Bedfont Pits site will be reopened for its final day on Friday, August 8.

The four-day inquiry, looking into development firms Chrisfys's plans for the industrial estate and surrounding scrubland began in May but was adjourned after three days.

Residents will be given to the chance to share their opinions on the final day before government inspectors make their decision about the area, which is technically classified as greenbelt land.

Bedfont will be hosting a skating, boarding and jumping spectacular this weekend as young people raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The local young people will be showing off their skateboard, BMX and inline skating skills at Bedfont Skate Park on Hatton Road, Bedfont on Saturday 19 July.

Bedfont Skate Jam has been organised by the local young people with the support of the council's youth service.

john-coward.jpgThe chief investigator looking into the Heathrow crash earlier this year has promised his team is closing in on the answer to the mysterious engine failure.

David King, of the Air Accident Investigation Bureau, has been heading a 150 person investigation into the crash, which saw a Boeing 777 glide to safety over Bedfont homes on January 17.

Speaking to West Area councillors at a meeting last Thursday, he confirmed a failure in the fuel flow had led to the engine trouble but admitted the cause was still uncertain.

UFO at Heathrow?A Bedfont grandmother is appealing for fellow witnesses after spotting a trio of mysterious lights 'swooping and merging' in the skies above her home.

Lynne Martin, of Beech Road, may live just one mile from the airport but she is adamant the three large lights she saw moving around last night were neither planes or helicopters.

Elsie SorrellCongratulations to independent great-grandmother Elsie Sorrell who is celebrating her 100th birthday today at her Bedfont home.

Mrs Sorrell, who has lived in Cassiobury Avenue since 1945, shares her special day each year with Independence Day in America, and some of that spirit has clearly rubbed off.
