Self service at Feltham Library
Book worms will be in for a treat next time they drop into Feltham Library as they can now check out, check in and renew all their favourite reads for themselves.
A new self-service system at the library, in The Centre, Feltham, means late returners need never again face the stern gaze of an angry librarian.
Instead they can use state of the art Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to control their own borrowing.
The new system can process multiple items without having to physically scan a barcode which will shorten queuing times and speed up processes. Customers simply insert their card, place their books on the self-service plate and follow the on-screen instructions.
Council leader Peter Thompson launched the new system on Monday. He said: "Customers will spend less time queuing to borrow and return their books and library staff will have more time to assist customers."
Tim Grier, managing director of John Laing, the company managing the library service, said: "Feltham Library is well used by the public and an ideal location to implement this great new technology."
