Boxing at the Southville Centre

Posted by Nina Rossi on Nov 4, 08 11:59 AM in Clubs/societies

boxing.jpgThe army and the police both descended on the Southville Centre last week to knock some discipline into the youth of Bedfont.

But rather than fleeing, kids aged from seven to 19 flocked to the centre in Southville Road in the hopes of picking up some top tips in the boxing ring.

Former England boxer, PC Mike Hunter, who runs a regular training session in Hanworth, teamed up with Lance Corporal Chris Surtees, from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, who are based at Hounslow Barracks, to coach the youngsters in basic boxing skills, including punching, skipping, footwork and defence.

Community development officer Noveen Phillips said: "We ran these sessions for a week in the summer term and they were hugely popular so we've invited them back.

"The kids love doing something a bit different. They practice with pads and punch bags so no one gets hurt and they seem to really enjoy it."

We'd like to hear from you.
