Transport chiefs at Hounslow Council are being handed £3.4million to cut road deaths and improve the borough's battered streets.

The lump sum for 2009/10 was announced by London mayor Boris Johnson.

It comes from Transport for London (TfL) and will also be used to improve the town centre and cycling facilities, tackle the school run and carry out essential main road maintenance.

The funds will allow council chiefs to finance several schemes, including a £300,000 footbridge to be built over three years at Bedfont Road, providing local pedestrians and cyclists with a safe route across the Windsor to Staines railway line.

Another £540,000 has been earmarked for road renewal works at Twickenham Road repairing uneven surfaces, potholes and cracks.

Staines Road will also see improvements as £220,000 has been set aside for a safety scheme to improve the junction layout between Wellington Road and Steve Biko Way.

Mayor Johnson said: "I am awarding Hounslow a budget of £3.4m next year for local schemes that will make travelling safer, more accessible and more environment-friendly, helping to improve the quality of life for people across the borough."

Other schemes set to benefit are cycle training, where £160,000 will be spent, and four recharging points for electric vehicles, costing £25,000.

A Hounslow Council spokesman said: "Now we've got the funding we just need to get on with the hard work of making the improvements that local people want."
