Hundreds turn out to back Help for Heroes
Patriotic residents crowded into Rectory Meadows football ground last week to show their support for the armed forces at a charity match in aid of Help for Heroes.
The 1,000 strong crowd enjoyed a thrilling game courtesy of the Royal Marines who put up a good fight but eventually lost 5-4 to Chelsea Old Boys.
Organiser Emma Ronan, from Bedfont, whose marine husband, Lee Mills, is back for two weeks leave during a tour of the Helmand Province, said: "I'm absolutely exhausted but the day was a fantastic success so it was well worth it.
"We had a huge crowd and raised loads of money and to top it off Lee came home early so he got to share the day with us."
First counts revealed the hugely successful event had raised well over the £5,000 target, with an expected total of at least £10,000 once the final donations are collected.
All the cash will be going to Help for Heroes, a charity which supports injured servicemen and their families.
As well as the football there was fun entertainment for all the family, with face painting, raffles and the Chelsea mascot, Stamford, roaming among the crowd.
