Caravan fire causes traffic chaos

A fire caused traffic chaos in Feltham on Wednesday night as Bedfont Road was shut while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Three fire engines and fifteen firefighters were called to the burning a derelict static caravan and garage at 7.25pm and the road was closed between the Clockhouse Roundabout and St Dunstan's Road as firefighters believed there may have been gas cylinders on site.

Soon after, one lane of the road was opened but motorists reported delays of up to half an hour through Feltham, Hanworth, Bedfont and Ashford as they sought alternative routes.

Tony Welsh, who uses Bedfont Road on his commute home to Stanwell, said: "It was choc-a-bloc. Nothing seemed to be moving anywhere in Feltham and everyone was looking for alternative routes to cut through. You could see the smoke once you got nearer - until then I had no idea what the delay was about."

The fire was out by 8.15pm and a police spokesman said traffic was back to normal by 9pm. Police believe the fire was caused by accident and have ruled out arson.
